Loved NSMB2 when I played it for the first time last year, I thought it was a great sequel to 1. And I thought the whole coins galore thing was a fun way to make it a little different than other titles without messing with the formula. Just some new coin-related power ups, more coins in an otherwise familiar level design, and the one million counter that, while a bit lackluster in its reward, made repeat playthroughs and random pick up and play sessions have some connectedness. I personally think it was a good choice; one million coins is too long of a grind to lock anything seriously cool behind it, but it’s fun to set a congratulations prize that far out for those who love to replay Mario games over and over again.
